Project title : "Strengthening national and provincial capacity for prevention, treatment, care and support related to HIV,Tuberculosis and Malaria, building on successful programmes in South Africa"

Pop. 42m, GDP $3,170. Tuberculosis incidence estimate 227,000 (93,700 smear positive); notification 111,269 (257 per 100,000) / 77,391 positive, case detection 84%. High burden country, 80% Directly Observed Treatment, Short course coverage. Treatment success 60% (Directly Observed Treatment, Short course)/49%. Funding from Govt, with support from USCDC, UKDfID, Belgian Gov., WHO/IUATLD.

HIV adult prevalence >20% (8-36%), PLHA >4m. An initial proposal ($116m) including this project as component 2 was evaluated in round one. The project aims to reduce Tuberculosis/HIV through coordination and acceleration of Govt plan for Tuberculosis/HIV/Sexually Transmitted Infections. It includes Voluntary Counselling and Testing as entry point, management of HIV-related illness and Tuberculosis and increase delivery of comprehensive prevention, care and support at district level.
