MEDIA ADVISORY
29 January 2002
FUND TO REPORT ON FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL BOARD MEETING IN GENEVA

When: 12:30-13:30 on Tuesday 29 January 2002.

What: News Conference to report on outcomes of the first Board meeting of the Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Where: 9 rue de Varembé (across from the CICG main conference hall), Room D, Ground Floor.

Who: Board members (to be determined); Anders Nordstrom and Paul Ehmer from the Secretariat.

At the first organizational meeting of the new Board of the Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, on 28-29 January, members will finalize procedures to ensure that funding can be rapidly disbursed. The Fund is expected to issue the first call for proposals immediately after the meeting. Participants in the Board meeting will include high-level representatives from Anglo-American PLC, Brazil, China, Gates Foundation, Italy, Japan, German Institute for Medical Mission, Health Rights Action Group, Pakistan, Sweden, Thailand, Uganda, United Kingdom, and the United States. Speaker line-up at the news conference will be based on Board members' availability. The Fund is a new independent financial mechanism set up to attract, manage and disburse new resources to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which together kill nearly six million people a year and cause immeasurable social and economic impact. The Fund, which will be supported by a small Secretariat based in Geneva, has US$1.7 billion in current pledges; far more resources are needed and will be sought once the Fund becomes operational.
