FUND TO REPORT ON FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL BOARD MEETING
IN GENEVA
When:
12:30-13:30 on Tuesday 29 January 2002.
What:
News Conference to report on outcomes of the first Board
meeting of the Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria.
Where:
9 rue de Varembé (across from the CICG main conference hall),
Room D, Ground Floor.
Who:
Board members (to be determined); Anders Nordstrom and Paul
Ehmer from the Secretariat.
At
the first organizational meeting of the new Board of the
Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, on
28-29 January, members will finalize procedures to ensure
that funding can be rapidly disbursed. The Fund is expected
to issue the first call for proposals immediately after
the meeting. Participants in the Board meeting will include
high-level representatives from Anglo-American PLC, Brazil,
China, Gates Foundation, Italy, Japan, German Institute
for Medical Mission, Health Rights Action Group, Pakistan,
Sweden, Thailand, Uganda, United Kingdom, and the United
States. Speaker line-up at the news conference will be based
on Board members' availability. The Fund is a new
independent financial mechanism set up to attract, manage
and disburse new resources to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria, which together kill nearly six million people a
year and cause immeasurable social and economic impact.
The Fund, which will be supported by a small Secretariat
based in Geneva, has US$1.7 billion in current pledges;
far more resources are needed and will be sought once the
Fund becomes operational.
